Metal Fabrication Applications

Metal fabrication is an industry with numerous applications that apply to a wide variety of products.  Some of these applications are machine related, some architectural, and some can be as small as screws, nuts, and bolts.  Whatever product is being created by metal fabrication, compressed air is essential to the quality of the finished product.  In fact, air compressors can be considered the main power source in manufacturing.  The compressed air keeps many pieces of equipment running and doing their job efficiently.   Let’s take a closer look at a few of these pieces of equipment and how compressed air powers them:

Laser & Plasma Cutters

Compressed air is now commonly being used as a cost-effective alternative to Nitrogen for plasma and laser cutting applications.  In these instances, compressed air is combined with the heat to provide increased energy to penetrate the metal.  The compressed air helps direct the heat to the correct areas of the metal allowing for a more precise cut. Compressed air also allows for faster cutting in the mid to thinner gauge metals.

Air Knives

Air knives are one of the most obvious pieces of equipment in the metal fabrication process that utilizes compressed air.  They rely on steady streams of compressed air to operate!  Air knives are used for a variety of functions such as cutting, bending, blasting, grinding, or painting.  In all of these air knife processes, compressed air is used to remove cutting fluid or other substances from the metals, while also providing the force behind the air knives.

Paint Sprayers

Paint sprayers and air knives go hand-in-hand.  Paint sprayers are considered finishing equipment as they provide the final coat of color and protection on the metal products.  Compressed air is used to push the paint through the guns and disperse it to either a wider or precise range on the metal.
